The National Energy Situation Report reveals that in 2022, Italy opted to use less energy derived from gas and iron, and more energy produced from oil and coal.
The war in Ukraine has influenced the energy market, resulting in a global energy crisis and a 7.9% decrease in energy intensity compared to 2021.
Renewable energy sources in 2022 satisfied 19% of the consumption. In particular, there is a collapse in hydroelectric power in favor of a 12% increase in solar power, a record high.
Renewable electricity production also decreased by 14% compared to 2021.
According to the Annual Report, the gross energy availability in 2022 is composed as follows:
- 37.6% from natural gas
- 35.7% from oil and oil products
- 19% from renewables
- 5% from solid fuels
- 2.5% from electricity
- 0.8% from waste.
For 2022, MASE (Ministry of Sustainable Energy) records a 2.5 Mtep reduction in final consumption and an increase in energy savings achieved through White Certificates of 0.174 Mtep (+41.4%).
Tax deduction measures for energy efficiency in buildings have led to a new savings of 0.868 Mtep of final energy.
Investments in new renewable energy production plants amount to approximately 4 million euros, while those for energy efficiency projects are 8.5 billion.
In 2022, Italy's energy imports increased by 3.5%, and national production decreased by about 8%, highlighting the country's increased dependence on foreign sources.
In particular, foreign energy imports showed these increases:
- Oil and oil products (+4,731 ktep, +10.5%)
- Solid fuels (+2,235 ktep, +41.6%)
- Natural gas (-2,847 ktep, -4.9%).
